AUGUST PILE: Court Of The Dead Death

This has been on my impulse buy list for a while now, because of the absolutely stunning sculpt and paint detail and also needing more scythes. Also, to clarify the title a bit, this is “Death” from Boss FIght Studios’ Court of the Dead line. Probably the only fig in the line I care about.

It being Boss Fight, there is like 5% extra jank in the engineering. And I’m not talking about the single elbows, which is disappointing but unsurprising. Things like a couple spots in the right shoulder where it’s a bit loose. Or the hood/cape thing being put together in a way that makes it want to pop off if you look at it funny.

It’s never enough to get me to write off Boss Fight, it’s almost always enough to keep me just south of the “love it / like it a lot” line. We’ll see what Space Lady is like next month.

As for the pic, this was a pain in the ass and also a fun one. First pain in the ass - I’ve never really taken advantage of BigBadWorkshop’s parts interchangeability to any great degree because it’s usually more trouble than its worth to me. But I wanted a LOT of cultists and I only had one dude in a robe. So in addition to sneaking Ryu in there, I did head/hand swaps with a werewolf, Count Dracula, Ambassador of RlYeh, Red Demo, Halloween Boy, and Tuxmonkey to make all eight total. But that was a lot to keep track of, not to mention getting the angles as consistent as possible since each one was shot individually.

Also, I built the background with the flaming pentagram, got Death and a couple of cultists laid in, and somehow accidentally and permanently flattened the layers. Which is not only generally bad even if the layers had been exactly how I wanted them, they weren’t, plus at least two of the cultists needed to be “behind” Death and that would have been a big hassle. So I started over and redid the background.

On the upside, it did finally give me the push I needed to figure out that, yes, you CAN install Photoshop brush packs in Affinity, so now I have a fire brush pack, which made the flaming pentragram look twice as good as the first version.
