Look, I know buying a NECA blind is a risk.I’m not even that mad at this Leatherhead. He’s mostly what I expected. He’s a big boy and he’s from NECA and historically big boys from NECA do not focus on range of motion. Other companies, even Hasbro, generally try a little harder these days, but you always know when NECA decides “fuck it, put in the standard joints and they’ll move how far they move” and Leatherhead is one of those.
I’ll say this - he does pass the Chair Test. Barely, and obviously the tail needs to be reckoned with, but he can sit on a surface. The hips go just high enough and the knees bend just far enough. But there’s nothing in the torso, the neck is barely a thing, the elbows don’t go past about 85 degrees, the mouth doesn’t open. So his options are very limited. Also because of his proportions, he barely has a lap, so this pose kept falling apart on me.
On all the other NECA fronts, though, he shines. He looks good. Great sculpt, lots of bright colors, lots of texture. He comes with a ton of hands, a hat that doesn’t stay on very well, a spear, two giant guns he can only hold one-handed because of his limited motion arms and giant torso, and a white ball for reasons I do not understand. I assume it’s a ball. It’s a white plastic sphere.
Anyway he’s definitely an honorary Dreadnok. I’m very happy with this pic in terms of fast turnaround. I picked the background, got the positioning right the first time, realized his hat fell off, put the hat on, positioning was still good, layering the tree stump and the front grass went very smoothly, boom done. I’m working on something else that is an absolute horror show, so this going smoothly was a big help.
