IMPULSE BUY: Mr. Terrific (Movie)

This is probably it for me and McFarlane 7”.Not because this figure is bad per se. It’s not. In many ways it’s quite good. But Todd and I have a big difference of opinion on what a $35 toy should be, and the number of times I’m going to go along with his view over a particular character between now and when he loses the license is, I think, zero.

I even thought about going along with the Mortal Kombat Klassic line, with its $30 price points, but they’ve announced five figures and one of them is a Gamestop exclusive and one of them is in a two-pack and honestly I paid the Gamestop Shipping Tax for Superfriends Riddler and I’m not emotionally prepared to do it again for a Kitana whose hips look like a Super7 Thundercat.

But I did need a Mr. Terrific, because first, I needed ANY Mr. Terrific for the collection, and second, I really loved Mr. Terrific in Superman, and this is a very good likeness and the movie uses the traditional outfit. So hooray there.

BUT.

The accessories for this standard-ass $35 figure are four facial expressions and two T-Sphere holding hands to go along with the two non-T-Sphere holding hands. A loose T-Sphere? Nope. A loose T-Sphere doing anything? Nope. A stand to put a loose T-Sphere doing anything on? Hell no.

Also let’s talk Todd’s new obsession with faceplates. Here are the faceplates that came with Robot #4 and Mr. Terrific:

How is it that the McFarlane Retro line can embody the joy of play so enthusiastically when that joy is almost COMPLETELY missing from DC Multiverse? I saw Superman. I loved Superman. When I think of these characters from Superman I don’t think of “That time Mr. Terrific smiled slightly” or “how open are that Robot’s eyes?” Also even my friends with working eyes say that two of those Mr. Terrific faces are the same.

For the pic, this was a surprisingly easy one-shot based on a bit from the movie. Did I have to erase seven fucking stands, much of them manually? Yes I did. Did I exhaust my supply of Somewhat Generic Military Dudes? Damn near. But I got what I wanted except for the whole “matching the texture of the foreground and background” thing which I struggle with in nearly every pic.
