Gonna do that thing everyone does in the last week of the year and do a countdown of my fifteen favorite additions to the toy collection this year. This is a random mix of objective quality, love of the character, general emotional resonance, and collecting milestones. I’m also going to do my 15 favorite toy pics of the year. Three per day. Should just about take me to 2025. Let’s do 15, 14, and 13.
Early this year, I followed a whim and a sale and got a bunch of the Super7 Ultimates non-transforming G1 Transformers. I like all of them, but all of them have weird articulation limitations because Super7 don’t give a shit about posint.
Grimlock takes the win out of the five because of the size and posing ability that’s surprising for his size and type. Compared to the Super7 Dragonzord, for example, he’s practically a gymnast. Also, he Grimlock.
Super7’s accessory game is where they always win me back after I’m annoyed by the joints, and Grimlock is no exception - especially the apron, tray, and drinks.
#14: Mrobius (Marvel Legends Animated Morbius and Dr. Strange VHS 2-Pack)
This figure does one thing. Re-creates the weird fucking design of the Spider-Man: The Animated Series Morbius, and it does its job perfectly. Are there more expensive toys? Yes. Are there toys with better sculpts, more fancy paint apps, and piles of accessories? Yes. Do any of those figures come with hands with “life force suckers” all over them? Absolutely not.
I’ve sung the praises of Jada Toys’ Street Fighter II toys literally every time I’ve gotten one, and I’m going to keep getting them. But Dhalsim, even within that hallowed grouping, is something special.
Because he comes with stretchy bendy arms and legs you can swap out at the biceps and thigh swivels, and that takes the figure from “Holy Shit” to “Holy Fucking Shit”. It’s an amazing toy feature especially for posing options, so it’s absolutely my jab. The only thing keeping it from being higher is emotional attachment and meaningfulness to the collection.
