The Tick: “Season One, Part 2”

So. Goddamned. Good.
My intent was to gradually work my way through the rest of The Tick’s first season, but after watching one episode, we watched three more, and then watched the last two the next day, because it was damn near impossible to stop. I know two friends who had the exact same experience.

The first half of the season was very good, but it was also the saga of the show turning into a Tick TV show. I mean, it’s Arthur’s origin story, but it’s also the show gradually unfolding its universe to viewers so that, in the second half, it can be the full-on, balls to the wall, Tick series we’ve always wanted. If the cartoon is The Tick filtered through child safety, and the Warburton series is The Tick filtered through pre-CGI low budget, the Amazon series is The Tick, unfettered but modernized.

It’s so good. I don’t even want to talk about the plot, which involves THe Terror’s plan to kill Superion and The Tick thinking he’s an Eastern Bloc robot. They work in some classic Tick bits in new and wonderful ways. There is simultaneous flying and roof bounding. There are satisfying character moments, one HUGE surprise, and an interesting setup for Season 2. THe point is, if you can watch it and haven’t, watch it, and if you can’t watch it, see if you can find a way to watch it.
