THE PRE-XMAS PILE: MOTU Origins Panthor

Twas the week before Christmas, and a couple boxes showed up. One box of mostly clearance/sale stuff from BigBad, and one from Ringside. So, over the holidays, while I was ranking and posting, I was also shooting and compositing, and we start with Panthor. So, in Masters of the Universe toys, “Origins” is a very large line featuring classic toy looks with modern engineering. “Origins Cartoon Collection” is a much smaller line featureing classic CARTOON looks with modern engineering. The difference is small. Maybe half an inch more scale in Cartoon Collection and cartoon-specific accessories but to my eye there isn’t a huge difference between the toy and cartoon designs. That said, when it comes to characters, I have no plans to mix and match. I’ll wait for the CC version or skip it.

But when it comes to something like Panthor? Skeletor’s version of Battle Cat? When it goes on sale for ten bucks? That, I can use. Skeletor sits a smidge awkwardly in the saddle, but is that a scale thing or is it just that the toys aren’t very fancy and the Origins Skeletor would do the same? No idea. Don’t care. Purple kitty.

This idea came to me and I couldn’t resist it, and I’m glad I was able to realize it. This is NOT one shot. I spent half an hour with my blood pressure spiking trying to get Skeletor and Panthor into this pose naturally and then gave up because there is an upper limit to my newly discovered “no, really, do it the hard way” ethos and I was well past it. Evil Lyn obviously had to be separate, and the background is a mix of an animation cel and the Super7 Snake Mountain playset.

I played around with “making beams” in Affinity - a mix of colored shapes and the Inner and Outer glow effects, and I’m pretty happy with it. It’s basic, but it works, at least for now. Eternian laster pointer!
