HOLIDAYS AND BEYOND: Super7 Bulk and Skull

These two are really defining my love/hate relationship with Super7.I got these for two reasons. First and foremost, when people in your life insist on giving you gifts, you turn to “things you wuldn’t get for yourself”, and these very much qualify on that front. But also, Hasbro stopped making Power Rangers toys and quit before making Bulk and Skull, and so, for the foreseeable future, Super7 Ultimates are the only way to get these characters And that’s a shame.

At their best, Super7 Ultimates are insanely accurate portrayals of cartoon and toy characters with impeccable accessories and functional articulation.

At their worst, they’re in a weird Uncanny Valley between realistic and cartoony, with articulation that largely count as Joints In Name Only. And that end of the spectrum is where Bulk and Skull live.

I mean, they’re look like Bulk and Skull! Mostly! But there’s a slight sheen and roundness to everything that pushes it just a smidge into cartoony, and that makes them odd. And I don’t need to tell yu about the joints, all you need to do is look at the picture and see how close I could get the two of them to “kneeling behind a hedge”. It ain’t great. When I’m looking at a standard Black Series figure and wishing for those joints, well…

They come with normal heads and behatted heads, weird fast food bombs, the video camera, and glasses, although Skull’s glasses didn’t last a week in the Recent Figure Accessories Baggie before breaking in half at the nosepiece, failing in an environment any number of Jazwares glasses have survived.

But they are Bulk and Skull, and they can secretly film the Power Rangers with their helmets off in a brightly lit park so I don’t have to fuck with shading a bunch, and they’re the best Bulk and Skull figures on the market because they’re the only ones.
