FIG PHOTO: “Tome, My X-Men!”

Six. Days. For this joke. The drive to do it the right way, regardless of what “it” is, is  agift and a curse. Because the joke is a simple one, one I barrowed from the Richard Cheese cover of Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Do Me”. But the joke is in the format of setup / punchline that had to be their own individual bits.

So the left half was basically a normal to normal plus amount of work for a toy pic - shoot the Professor X closeup holding the iPad, get it at a good angle, find a web-based text chain generator that I could customize, write the text chain and pad it with in-jokes, and crop the inset with the joke bit for the central zoom-in.

But oh, that right panel. I haven’t done one of those in a WHILE. Probably not since the Dreadnok Barbecue. Find seven books. Be annoyed that I can’t find the two fancy books that came with Gargoyles. Shoot eight figures individually from multiple angles holding the seven books. Pick the angles for placement. Madk / erase stands as needed. Adjust each one individually for brightness and contrast to try to match the room tone and the other pictures. Add shadows. Brighten all the books slightlyto  make them stand out for the joke.

It was a lot of work but once I was in it, I was fucking in it and I’ll be damned if I was gonna bail.

Fun fact - an hour after finishing the shots for this, I was setting up the shots for another pic and found the Gargoyles books. Of course.
