Did I need this? Well, that’s complicated. You see, I already had a Chainsaw Man. Bandai’s Anime Heroes, $25, perfectly decent Chainsaw Man. Sure, it could have had a bit more articulation, especially at the elbows, but it was fine, right?
Then Jazwares dropped this Total Anime line that also included a Chainsaw Man. Size and appearance-wise, very similar to the Bandai one. Price even cheaper at $18.
What does the Jazwares one have that the Bandai doesn’t? A startling amount. First, double-jointed elbows. On both sets of arms. There are two sets of chansaw arms, one lightly bloody, one heavily bloody, and both have double-elbows that go ALL the way.
The knees go all the way, too, unlike the Bandai’s, which go most of the way.
And it has two heads (one lightly bloody blade, one heavily bloody blade), and three face-places: closed mouth, open mouth, open mouth with tongue. So really a big upgrade.
What you give up? The smooth, rubbery torso overlay to hide the articulation, and the slightly greater mobility in the torso as a result. That’s basically it. Oh, and ankle swivels. The Bandai has swivels and no up and down, the Jazwares has up and down and no swivel. Also, the Bandai has no blood, the Jazwares one has no… no blood.
So, between the two, I have a Chainsaw Man for all seasons! Plus I went to Wal-Mart to get him and dropped a pile on other figures I didn’t really need either! Even by my current loose definitions of “need”.
