KAIJU: Super76 Ultimates Godzilla Minus one (Charging Edition And Also Buildings

I mean, you gotta have a Godzilla, right?First, I got my iPad Magic Keyboard replaced under warrantee, so I can real type instead of screen type, which is good ‘cause there’s a fair amount to cover here. The tiny buildings that came with my Mezco clearance Ultraman really made me want to lean into messing with some Kaiju stuff this year. I haven’t played with big monster fights since, well, the Ultraman pics and then the Power Rangers stuff from a couple years ago.

And if you’re gonna do it, you need the big boy. I’ve actually been looking for My Godzilla Figure for a while now. At least since I finally saw Godzilla Minus One last year. Godzillas are tricky. They’re big boys, so they always have less mobility than you’d prefer. And the ones with any mobility at all tend to be spendy. Basically the options are Super7 Ultimates or Bandai S.H. Monsterarts, and both had their issues, but then Super7 dropped a Minus One Godzilla with the extra spines for the beam attack and the spines are blue and the whole thing was just more dynamic and what I wanted/needed. So that’s what I settled on.

Basically, if I have disappointment, it’s in the legs. My recollection of G Minus One is that Godzilla was more sinuous and flexible despite his bulk, especially in the water, and the legs don’t really allow for that at all, because they don’t straighten out at the nee or go very far back at the hip. So it’s more traditional Godzilla standing.

It also feels like if each of the ball joints in the tail had just 25% more play, the tail posability would go from OK to Fucking Fantastic, and it seems like it would have been feasible, but this is Super7 we’re talking about and Super7 and “pushing the boundaries of action figure engineering” have never really gone hand in hand.

Quibbles aside, the sculpt is gorgeous - full of texture almost to the point of being uncomfortable to hold. He’s very pointy, especially with the spines, all three rows of them. The gap in spines in the pic above is to accommodate the mid-torso joint - when it’s all the way forward it gaps some. All the way back and it bumps into the ones below.

And also, buildings. I’ve been poking around Etsy for 3-D printed buildings for these types of pics - this is a set of five fairly basic skyscraper shapes. I figure this type of thing plus a few specialty buildings will make a good mix eventually.

The pic taught me that I have a lot to learn by practicing. It’s tough finding backgrounds you can mesh well with the buildings, especially if you insist on shooting everything in a single shot. I’m not saying I’m averse to shooting the buildings, duplicating them, digitally placing them, etc. It’ll probably be inevitable because I can’t store an entire city’s worth. But it’s also tough to find cityscapes with the right balance of open spce in the middle to drop stuff into.

The atomic breath I drew from scratch came out hella good, though.
