TLBPOLFAW: NECA Robocop

Directive 5: BE SLIGHTLY DISAPPOINTING.The NECA Ultimate Robocop was an impulse buy, thrown into the Pile of Loot during an end-of-year bit of frivolous abandon. And it fulfills its primary purpose: add an iconic character to the collection in a normal, best-possible version. But also it ain’t great.

NECA Ultimates can be a little hit or miss. And this is just a smidge miss. Good ideas, but the execution is a little irritating and I’d have made different choices. Robocop is no Vincent Price.

Let’s start with the good. Sculpt and paint is mostly solid, although some of the details seem kind of mushy. There’s an overall lack of crispness that maybe I’m noticing more because of some other great figures I’vee been getting lately. 

Articulation is at best NECA average and barely that. Now, this is Robocop. He’s not know for his dynamic movmenet and flexibility, so that’s mostly fine, but there are generally four areas where any figure can excel - sculpt, paint, movement, and accessories, and Robocop’sw kind of an across the board 5.5-7.0 on everything. He’s not exciting.

The accessories… feh. You get the iconic pistol, which is fine. You get a replacement right hand with the data spike, and that’s… OK, although in classic NECA BOIL IT fashion, it had to be heated to get the gripping hand off and also it doesn’t turn or come off where you’d expect. He comes with the giant rifle, which is completely fucking useless TBH even if one of the bipod legs didn’t pop off in a matter of seconds. It’ll pop back on but won’t stay if you look at it funny. And he comes with an unmasked head, which is fine but the extent of what I want/need a Robocop for doesn’t really require it.

And then there’s a blast effect. It fits on the rifle and also on the pistol and you can see it in the pic above if you look hard. It’s supposed to be smoke but also it’s kind of shaped like a dick and balls and also it kind of looks like bubbles more than smoke. It looks wrong and weird and I don’t like it. But it did give me the idea for a pic, and since ACABERC, a kids’ birthday party seemed idea.
