THE FANCIES OF 2025 2: Ultraman!

2025 is turning into a Year of Fancies. My willingness to shell out for a higher quality figure at a higher price point has been… shifting this year. It’s partly because of things like Gundam where the only good toys are the pricey ones. And sometimes it’s an opportunity to get a Very Very Expensive figure at only a Very Expensive price. Which is how I ended up with my first Mezco 1:12 Collective figure, Classic Ultraman.

It does almost all the things.

It has a stretchy fabric suit. It has every joint you’d want except butterfly shoulders. It LIGHTS UP (eyes and chest). It has tons of hands. It has a soft goods wired cape. It has four weapon effects pieces like the eye beams above. It has a tiny version of his plane, the VTOL.

And it has FIVE TINY BUILDINGS THAT BREAK IN HALF. You can see them in the foreground above. This figure alone is making me want to get into more kaiju-style photography this year.

As with any fancy fig, I made multiple pics.

Here’s the cape. Apparently there’s lore behind the cape but for me it’s a cape, and it’s a red cape, and I have a Power Rangers Mighty Minotaur. The Ultraman poses very well - the suit and the lack of butterfly shoulders do limit things more than a Jada or a Robot Spirits Gundam, but the tradeoffs are mostly worth it. The suit is beautiful.

And here’s two more weapon pieces - the Ultra Slash (ring) and the Arm Thing, taking out Eye Guy.

And here he is just pickin’ up a Snizzard.

And here’s the final weapon effect, his main beam (attached to a hand) taking out Pirantishead.

He also came with a stand that’s so nice I’m gonna buy three generic ones from Mezco to try and solve some of my posing frustration with the cheap flying stands I started with. All in all a damn fine toy. Thanks, clearance price!
