Fun with lighting!Value propositions are always weird. This is technically a two-pack at two-pack prices (although due to a pre-order glitch I didn’t pay full price, but I would have), but the second part of the two-pack is a giant, four-piece, some assembly required, pillar of flame and flame bird in clear yellow/orange/red plastic. And the figure is fairly basic, with a second more normal head and a pair of fists I will never use.
I am gradually building out a core X-Men team with a weird mix of animated and close-enough comic figures, with a team looely based around the animated series / X-Men ‘97, and this is my preferred version of Jean Grey over the cartoon outfit or comic Marvel Girl gear, so that was important. And the flame effect piece is, in technical terms, completely fucking awesome. Would I have loved a bit of jointage in the wings? Sure. Was that a deal-breaker? Nope.
I’m hoping it’s not too difficult to remove the bird from the stand for some other photo possibilities, but I haven’t tried yet. The Phoenix figure is your typical mostly-body-suited woman you get from Marvel Legends, but well executed. Not the Comic Black Widow level of articulation, but Marvel Legends gonna Marvel Legends and make a great body and not use it more often.
For the picture, I set up a lighting rig behind it to shine through, then filled in a glow effect on the background digitally using a chunk of a background cel from the animated series. I couldn’t find a background I loved, and it shows, but I also knocked out seven new pictures of eleven new toys in four days, and this one came out the worst and is still pretty good, so I ain’t mad.
