Marvel Team Up: Ram and ROM!I like Mavel Legends. I have SO MANY Marvel Legends. But also, Marvel Legends is the most Meets Expectations toy line on the planet. Nearly every Marvel Legends figure goes exactly as hard as it needs to and no harder. Except sometimes. Like ROM.
They didn’t have to go this hard. Really they didn’t. There hasn’t been a ROM toy in decades. They could have half-assed this and we all would have been “Well, it could have been better, but at least we finally got a ROM!” and been happy. But this ROM is exceptional.
Mainly it’s the engineering. Motherfucker is a big boxy 70’s robot that moves and poses like a mid-range Spider-Man, with articulation built into the sculpt and engineering in incredibly clever ways. I mean, he has a big blocky jetpack on his back that extends to the upper butt. 99% of the time a toy company would say “fuck it, this guy is only bending forward!” Including Hasbro. But ROM’s backpack is just flexy enough and just far enough off the body that he can do a 45 degree backbend. A near 90 degree ab crunch is built seamlessly into the sculpt.
His head is a CUBE. His shoulders are a CUBE. And there’s still plenty of range of motion at the neck.
He has four hands, two handheld weapons (pistol and “scanner” with a blast effect that fits either. A -very- shiny finish. A fake comic book (the wave gimmick). Just an increidble amount of effort when they could’ve gotten away with so much less. What is best in toy? ROM BEST.
For the pic I went digging in the “90’s McFarlane” bin for a good monster to make big and be fought, and played around with a motion blur effect on Ram-Man. I like how it came out.
