Motherfucking Lucha Underground! (6/29)

Now, that's more like it.

Ultima Lucha starts next week, and runs for three weeks (three hours total, like last year; three separate episodes, unlike last year). We have our final card, and it's supported by some solid matches and vignettes this week.

Prince Puma and Dragon Azteca Jr. went at it. Fenix and Johnny Mundo went at it. Mil Muertes and King Cuerno went at it. All great matches, full of spark and energy, from some of the best Lucha Underground has to offer.

The Ultima Lucha card:

4 A Unique Opportunity Tournament - Cage, Texano, The Mack, Son of Havoc:

Cage is the most likely winner here, though 3/4 of these guys are excellent, and assuming it's three matches, at least one of them is sure to be great. Dario Cueto is promising his greatest "unique opportunity" ever as a prize, and I'll be curious to see what that is.

Taya Vs. Ivelisse

Who's best? Only one way to find out. I think Ivelisse is overdue for a big win, so I'll pick her here.

Black Lotus vs. Dragon Azteca Jr.

No idea what Lotus will be like in the ring, but DAJr. is goddamned amazing. Storywise, he kind of has to win, because if Lotus wins, she's gonna take his mask and ruin him forever. We might see a story element here - Black Lotus needs to know for sure who killed her parents, Dragon Azteca Sr. or Matanza Cueto.

Prince Puma vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.

I can't see Mysterio winning here. Older guy from the "outside" putting over the younger face of Lucha Underground and first ever LU champion is a no-brainer. Rey can still go, so this should be a joy to watch.

Mil Muertes vs. King Cuerno (Death Match)

I'm gonna go with Mil here, because technically he's the one seeking revenge for having been wronged, plus Cuerno won this week. Weird dynamics, though - both guys are technically heels but very well respected in The Temple. But unless Mil's leaving Lucha Underground for good, he'll win here.

Gift Of The Gods: Mariposa, Sexy Star, Siniestro de la Muerta, Marty the Moth, Killshot, Daga, Night Claw

Night Claw is my pick, because otherwise, why debut him in the match at all? Plus there are a lot of midcarders in this batch not ready for the main event. Killshot is a distant second possibility.

Trios Championship - Worldwide Underground vs. The Superfriends

OK. One of these names is new and the other is unofficial, but I'm guessing the Superfriends (Drago, Aerostar, Fenix) defeat the Underground (PJ Black, Jack Evans, Johnny Mundo) to pop the crowd and give Fenix the first-ever Triple Crown in Lucha U (Championship, Gift of the Gods, and now Trios).

Lucha Underground Championship - The Monster Matanza Cueto vs. Pentagon Jr.

This is a hell of a tough call. I want Pentagon to win. Everyone wants Pentagon to win. But we're not done with the big Aztec Tribes Apocalypse storyline yet, and Matanza is right at the center of it. So the best option is for Pentagon to ALMOST win and then lose in an either shenanigans-based or mysticism-based manner that will set up Season 3.
